What is account research?

Account research is the work of investigating a target company before contacting or meeting it. It gathers the company's priorities, financial position, leadership, buying committee, technology and recent news, so a seller can judge whether the account fits and open the conversation with something specific to that business.

What should account research cover?

At minimum it covers what the company does and how it makes money, its size and growth, the priorities its leadership has stated, the people likely to be involved in a purchase, the tools it already uses, and any recent trigger such as funding, a new executive or an expansion. Each finding should point toward a reason to talk now.

When should a seller do account research?

Before the first outreach to a high-value account, before a discovery call, and again before a proposal. Research at the first stage decides whether and how to reach out; research before a meeting decides which questions to ask and which problems to raise.

Can AI do account research?

AI can gather and summarize public information about a company quickly, including filings, news, job postings, leadership changes and company announcements. A person still needs to check the findings and decide what matters for the deal, so the strongest approach pairs automated gathering with a seller's judgment about the account.
